라스베이거스에서 상상할 수 있는 것.

매년 3월, University of Nevada, Las vegas의 미식축구경기장은
라스베이거스 7인제 대회를 위해 럭비경기장으로 개조된다.

(해외통신원 김도현) 필자는 지난 2017년 3월 1일부터 7일 5일 동안 HSBC 라스베이거스 월드 럭비 시리즈(이하 라스베이거스 세븐스)에 자원봉사자로 참여했다. 미국 해외 연수 기간 얻을 수 있었던 가장 큰 혜택 중 하나는 더 많은 국제규모의 스포츠 이벤트에 참여할 수 있었다는 점이다.

 

먼저, 라스베이거스 세븐스가 어느 정도 규모의 이벤트인지 소개하고 싶다. 전 세계 16개국의 각국 국가대표 남자/여자대표팀이 참가하며, 전 세계 10개 도시(두바이, 케이프타운, 시드니, 해밀턴, 라스베이거스, 밴쿠버, 홍콩, 싱가포르, 파리, 런던)에서 1년에 걸쳐 치러지는 월드투어 형태의 국제스포츠이벤트이다. PGA투어, F1 그랑프리처럼, 전 세계를 돌아다니며, 각 참가팀이 매 대회에서 포인트를 쌓는다.

 

라스베이거스 세븐스는 10개의 투어 도시 중에서도 홍콩, 두바이와 함께 가장 성공적인 시리즈로 평가된다(Stuff, 2017). 라스베이거스 세븐스는 2004년에 첫선을 보였으며, 지난 13년 동안 꾸준한 흥행을 이어오고 있다. 그렇다면 어떤 요소들이 라스베이거스 세븐스의 13년간의 꾸준한 성장을 가능하게 했을까?

지구상 최고의 관광도시 
라스베이거스는 년 400만 명의 관광객들이 찾는 지구상 최고의 관광도시이다. 5성급 호텔들과 카지노, 쇼핑센터, 화려한 베가스의 밤 문화들은 라스베이거스가 왜 해가 지지 않는 도시임을 말해준다(Chenu, 2015). 지역 자체의 풍부한 관광 자원이 도시에서 열리는 스포츠 이벤트 및 컨퍼런스와 융합되어 참가자들에게 유흥의 도시 라스베이거스만의 특별한 경험을 제공한다.

전 세계 럭비 팬들의 참여를 유도하기
라스베이거스와 미국럭비협회는 전 세계에서 몰려든 팬들과 소통하기 위해 많은 이벤트를 기획했다. 특히, 아마추어팀이 참가할 수 있는 대회도 개최해 미국 전역의 고등학교, 대학교, 클럽, 그리고 더 나아가 해외에서도 팀을 초청했다. 라스베이거스 세븐스와 같은 기간에 아마추어 대회를 주최하면서, 아마추어 대회에 참가한 모든 팀 구성원이 자연스럽게 라스베이거스 세븐스도 관람하게 유도했다. 이 밖에도, 경기 기간 개최된 심판강습회와 코치강습회를 통해 라스베이거스 세븐스를 보기 위해 찾아온 여행객들에게 유익하고 다양한 참여기회를 일주일간 끊임없이 제공했다(USA SEVENS RUGBY, n.d). 주최 측은 도시 특유의 관광자원과 팬 참여도를 높이는 마케팅 전략으로 라스베이거스 세븐스에서의 잊지 못할 경험을 팬들에게 제공한 것이다.

지역에서 열리는 다양한 축제들에 협조적인 라스베이거스
개막일 전날 밤에는 라스베이거스 도심중심에 위치한 프레몬트 스트리트(Fremont street experience)에서 선수들과의 전야제가 펼쳐졌다. 라스베이거스는 사람들이 가장 붐비는 장소에서 대회 측의 행사 활동을 허용하면서 해당 럭비 대회를 찾아온 여행객뿐만 아니라, 라스베이거스를 찾아온 모든 여행객에게 라스베이거스 세븐스를 노출할 수 있는 환경을 제공했다. 폐막식은 라스베이거스 코스모폴리탄 호텔에 있는 the Marquee Nightclub에서 치러졌다. 대회 입장권을 가져온 사람들에게는 무료입장을 제공했다. 현장에서는 대회 기간 멋진 경기력을 보여준 선수들과 팬들이 대회폐막의 아쉬움을 위로하는 시간을 가졌다. 라스베이거스는 주최 측에게 도시의 관광 명소와 자원을 아낌없이 협조하고 제공하며 도시 관광자원의 가치 극대화하는 방법을 알고 실천하는 것이었다.

대한민국에서도 성공적인 스포츠 투어 대회를 기대하며
우리나라에서도 라스베이거스만큼 여행객들에게 사랑받는 도시에서 스포츠이벤트를 개최한다면, 라스베이거스 세븐스 처럼 좋은 스포츠 관광 자원이 개발될 수 있을 것이다. 이 HSBC 월드시리즈 대회의 장점은 매년 연속적인 개최로 콘텐츠가 지속해서 개발될 수 있다는 점이다. 우리나라에서 이미 외국인들에게 사랑받는 관광지로 유명한 부산, 제주도, 서울 등이 후보 도시가 될 수 있을 것이다. 이와 동시에, 해당 협회와 관계자들의 팬 친화적인 마케팅 전략들이 실행된다면, 황금알을 낳는 대한민국만의 스포츠축제가 창출되리라 믿는다.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas

One of the biggest benefits of the Global Sports Leadership Program is easy access to various international sports events, such as The Rugby Weekend in Chicago, which attracted 100,000 spectators just within two days(http://www.sportnest.kr/2704). The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Las Vegas is widely regarded as the most popular series among ten cities (http://www.worldrugby.org/sevens-series).

 

The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series consists of ten incredible tournaments, which are held around the world. During the series, the sevens national teams compete for series points in each round(World Rugby, 2011). However, not all the tournaments are successful in attracting audiences. For instance, Wellington, New Zealand, which has been hosting the tournament for eighteen years, announced the tournament will no longer be held in Wellington, but in Hamilton due to insufficient demand from fans in Wellington(Stuff, 2017).

On the other hand, Vegas has built itself a solid reputation since The Las Vegas Sevens Rugby's inception in 2004. The tournament drew 15,800 fans in 2004, 68,608 fans in 2014, and 80,691 fans in 2017(Wikipedia, 2017). Why is the Las Vegas Rugby Sevens a success story?

Perfect Backdrop
First, Vegas is a city where various forms of entertainment never stop with the many casinos, and is also associated with other attractions such as shopping, fine dining, entertainment, and nightlife.

Maximized interaction with fans     
They maximized interaction with fans by hosting the Invitational Amateur Rugby Tournament including high school, college, and club level teams across the states and out of states. More than 275 teams competed at the Invitational Amateur Rugby Tournament in 2016(USA Sevens, 2016). In the mean time, all the participants from across the states and out-of-the states enjoyed the World-class level of Vegas Sevens as well.

Event-friendly city, Las Vegas
The actual duration of the event lasts for only three days; however, Vegas was ready to entertain its fans by providing various things to do. Before game day, fans had the opportunity to interact with their favorite players as they watched the participating teams proudly march down Fremont Street. This event was free and open to the public and included live entertainment following the parade(USA Sevens, n.d.).

USA Sevens hosts the final party of the tournament to celebrate the men's and women's rugby champions inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas at the Marquee Nightclub and indoor pool. While guests enjoy electronic music hits by famous DJ's, Marquee Nightclub offers tournament guests free, expedited entries and a complimentary drink ticket per tournament ticket(USA Sevens, n.d.).

It can also happen in Korea
Various entertainment in Vegas is making Vegas Sevens Rugby tournament popular but the USA Rugby's marketing strategies have also been playing a big role in achieving its fourteen years of consecutive success. Korea has a world-class level of sports facilities as it has hosted three Asian games, the 2002 FIFA World cup, and 1988 Summer Olympics and 2018 Winter Olympics. In addition, Korea is well known for its clean & convenient transportation system. Jeju-Island, Busan or Seoul, the capital city, might be one of the potential cities to host the Korean version of the Las Vegas Sevens Rugby.
